Romeo and Juliet Two Worlds - Literature Essay Samples
A major theme in the play Romeo and Juliet is the contrast between the two worlds: real and unreal. In order for true love between the star-crossed lovers to survive, it must exist in both. Romeo lives in the unreal world for the majority of the story, while Juliet alternates between the two. When they are together, Romeo and Juliet live in a harmonious but unreal world. Their love is never allowed to exist in the real world, where their feuding families exist, and so it is doomed from the start. This paper examines three characters ââ¬â Mercutio, Tybalt, and Lord Capulet ââ¬â whose solidly real-world behavior and decisions contrast starkly with Romeo and Julietââ¬â¢s and eventually contribute to that coupleââ¬â¢s demise. The eventual tragedy of Romeo and Juliet begins at their first meeting at the masquerade ball. The meeting is magical and inexplicably powerful, but mostly very unrealistic. The love is represented by a sudden magical spell, Cupidââ¬â¢s arrow simult aneously striking both of them. The initial love is based entirely on physical attraction and quite possibly fueled by its forbidden nature. The relationship is never allowed to exist in public, nor can it grow, and so it never goes beyond physical attraction. Had Romeo and Juliet paid attention to the real world influences around them, they might have improved the chances that their relationship would last. The first real-world character to examine is Mercutio. His love and best intentions for Romeo are first demonstrated in Act I, scene 4 when he encourages Romeo and suggests that with Cupidââ¬â¢s aid, Romeo should be able to rise above any fears and inhibitions. Later, after learning of Romeoââ¬â¢s dream, he tries to lighten Romeoââ¬â¢s mood by delivering a pragmatic soliloquy about the false hope of dreams. Also, Mercutio is often quite humorous. When Benvolio mentions the possibly threatening letter from Tybalt to Romeo, for example, Mercutio claims that Romeo has alrea dy been slain, ââ¬Å"stubbed with a white wenchââ¬â¢s black eyeâ⬠(2.4.14). Later, Mercutio observes that witty banter with Romeo is much more pleasant than lovesick groaning. He suggests that Romeo could be more sociable:ââ¬Å"Why, is this not better now than groaning for love? Now art thousociable, now art though Romeo; now art though what though art, by art as well as by nature. For this driveling love is like a great natural that runs lolling up and down to hide his bauble in a hole.â⬠(2.4.87)Mercutio demonstrates his other equally powerful and real-world quality, arrogance, when Tybalt seeks revenge on Romeo for crashing the Capulet masquerade ball. When Romeo is seeking a peaceful result, Mercutio shouts, ââ¬Å"Oh calm, dishonorable, vile submission! Alla staccato carries it away. Tybalt, you ratcatcher, will you walk? (3.1.72). He refuses to be intimidated, to a fault. Eventually his arrogance will fail him, and in his defense for Romeo he will suffer a fatal stab. Never losing his wit, when asked of his injury he claims, tis not so deep as a well nor so wide as a church door, but tis enough, twill serve. Ask for me tomorrow and you shall find me a grave man (3.1.95). In sum, Mercutioââ¬â¢s humor, arrogance, and devotion are qualities that make him a character very much in the real world. Tybalt is equally devoted, arrogant, and unwilling to be intimidated, but his violent nature is very different from Mercutioââ¬â¢s lighthearted one. Tybalt is quick to fight, defensive of the Capulet home to a fault. This is best demonstrated in Act I, scene 1, when he comes upon Benvolio trying to bring peace to a confrontation. Tybalt is quick to point out the conflicting message ââ¬â ââ¬Å"What, drawn and talk of peace?â⬠(1.1.70) ââ¬â and then challenges him.Later in Act I, scene 5, upon hearing Romeo speak, Tybalt claims, ââ¬Å"This, by his voice, should be a Montague,â⬠(1.5.55) and by his violent instinct follows, ââ¬Å "Fetch me my rapier, boyâ⬠(1.5.56). He is determined to sort things out immediately, by violence if necessary, despite his uncleââ¬â¢s request for peace. Lord Capulet is adamant about the need for peace, and Tybalt is equally convinced that violence is necessary. Tybalt is so angered that he insists that he cannot tolerate this and must leave ââ¬Å"It fits when such a villain is a guest. Iââ¬â¢ll not endure himâ⬠(1.5.76) but speaks of revenge, ââ¬Å"I will withdraw. But this intrusion shall, now seeming sweet, convert to bitterest gallâ⬠(1.5.92). Eventually in Act III, scene 1, this showdown occurs, resulting in the death of Mercutio and the eventual death of Tybalt at the hands of Romeo. Lord Capulet has all the qualities of a loving father and patriarch of a noble family, but has a bad side that makes him an ambivalent character. He demonstrates a proud yet ugly side early in Act I, scene 1; upon encountering the Montagues he requests his weapon, while La dy Capulet suggests that he would do better with a crutch than a sword. Given the choice of fight versus flight, he immediately chooses the former ââ¬â despite his status as a lord, who might be expected to take the high road. He acts differently in Act I, scene 2, when meeting with Paris he makes a dignified admission that he and Lord Montague are bound by their long-lived quarrel. He demonstrates dignity again at the masquerade ball. Upon realizing that Romeo is present, Tybalt is determined to cause a scene and evict the Montague. Lord Capulet chooses to ignore Romeoââ¬â¢s presence and convinces Tybalt to do the same: ââ¬Å"Content thee, gentle coz, let him alone. A bears him like a portly gentleman. And, to say truth, Verona brags of him to be a virtuous and well governed youthâ⬠(1.5.66).As a good father in Act I, scene 2, while meeting with Paris he suggests that they should wait for Juliet to mature, ââ¬Å"She hath not seen the change of fourteen years. Let two more summers wither in their pride Ere we may think her ripe to be a brideâ⬠(1.2.9). At Parisââ¬â¢ insistence that there are younger brides than her, Lord Capulet again is quick to point out that is not best, ââ¬Å"And too soon marred are those so early madeâ⬠(1.2.13). Lord Capulet is convinced that Paris is a perfect son-in-law but wishes to respect Julietââ¬â¢s youth. Eventually, however, he has a change of heart. He assures Paris that he will be able to sway Julietââ¬â¢s decision and they set a wedding date. When Juliet protests, Lord Capulet no longer acts the adoring father; in anger, he calls Juliet a ââ¬Å"disobedient wretchâ⬠(3.5.160) and claims that she is ungrateful to reject ââ¬Å"a gentleman of noble parentageâ⬠(3.5.181). The once loving father fights the temptation to strike her and insists that she will be at the church.Mercutio, Tybalt and Lord Capulet each has a very strong personality; they share many characteristics ââ¬â humo r, arrogance, devotion, violence, anger ââ¬â that are deeply rooted in the real world. Through their words and actions they remain realistic. Mercutio feels that it is better to experience life and not to dream; Tybalt refuses to be insulted or mocked; Lord Capulet sees the importance of arranging Julietââ¬â¢s marriage to a wealthy man. Romeo and Juliet, on the other hand, display an unbelievable fervor for each other and disregard for the more real people around them. Had they taken cues from their family members, they may have bridged the gap between real and unreal worlds and thereby avoided tragedy.

The Importance of External Auditorââ¬â¢s Independence Essay
The Importance of External Auditorââ¬â¢s Independence According to Gillespie, Lewis and Hamilton (2004:221) an audit is: ââ¬Å"a scrutiny of the accounts by a qualified auditor who carries out checks on the figures so as to establish whether the accounts show a true and fair view of the results and the financial position of the entity.â⬠According to Wikipedia (2011a), auditor independence refers to ââ¬Å"an attitude of mind characterized by integrity and an objective approach to the audit processâ⬠. Independent auditing has been an important part of the corporate monitoring system since the mid-1930s, when it became a legislation requirement after the Great Depression. This was caused by reckless spending by corporations in the late 1920s (Kim,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The auditing firm then also became defunct after a jury ruled against them for obstructing justice; after they had shredded documents of their auditing of Enron (Thomas, 2002). This was evidence to the potential of failure in independence between the corporation and the auditor. Therefore the lack of auditor independence may impact adversely on an audit in many different ways. Other than the two examples previously mentioned above, there have been many other corporations that experienced adverse reactions due to bad accounting practices and the lack of auditor independence. The independence of external auditors had been brought into question because of the potential influence the corporations had on its auditors. It used to be the duty of the corporationââ¬â¢s CFO to employ an external auditor. Therefore if the auditorââ¬â¢s report was not particularly favourable for the CFO, the CFO could decide to fire them and choose an auditor who would be willing to express a much more favourable view of the financial accounting of the corporation. This then led to the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 which gave the responsibility of choosing an auditor to an audit committee rather than the CFO (Locatelli, 2002). However there are still many other corporations that hav e experienced problems as a result of the lack of auditorShow MoreRelatedIndependence of External Auditor1203 Words à |à 5 PagesIndependence of external auditor By:- shubham kanchhal Auditor independenceà refers to the independenceà of the auditorà from parties that may have a financial interest in business being audited. British film industry Essay British films are widely defined as feature-length films which are expected by their makers to receive theatrical distribution and for which either the financial or creative impulse comes from Britain. The guiding principle is to identify films that directly contribute to British film culture or to the culture of the British film industry.à In the past scores of British films have never made it to the cinema being described as lacking quality and being average and unambitious. However recently people have commented on the makeover in British Cinema. This makeover refers to the increased popularity and commercial success of British Cinema in the UK and in some cases the US box offices. Also some British films have gained some excellent reviews from some of the worlds best-known film critics.à There is no typical British film as they come in many different genres from the social realist northern comedy of East is East, the British gangster movies of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Face to the Costume drama/biopic of Mrs Brown and Young Elizabeth. The only link between all these films is that they tackle issues that are typical representations of the British society and British national identity.à An example of diversity in British Cinema since the 1990s is Trainspotting. Trainspotting is a British made film which was based on Irvine Welshs 1993 novel also titled Trainspotting. It was made in 1996 and was directed by Danny Boyle one of Britains hot directors of 1990s who also directed Shallow Grave.à Trainspotting tackles the issues of new ladism (which is present in the popular and successful British sitcom Men Behaving Badly), disaffected youth, drug addiction, themes of Scottishness, unemployment, poverty and societies norms. Danny Boyles Trainspotting has a very clear distinction from other films that concentrate on male crisis. In most youth-orientated films young male joblessness and social exclusion are presented as either with no history, no proposed solution or no exception of change. As quoted by film critic Robert Wade, Danny Boyle framed the male underclass not as a social problem but as a subcultural lifestyle with certain attractions for a young, post-political male audience. Rather than attempting to arouse anger or social outrage Trainspotting encourages a knowing, empathetic complicity between audiences and the films young male inhabitants. Trainspotting addresses the anxieties of young male viewers by portraying the young male underclass in terms of an appealing subculture of dissent from the demands of adulthood, women and work. This point is backed up by Renton (Ewan McGregor) philosophy in the film, which is I choose not to choose life. Trainspotting was a very low budget film as it costed 1.7 million to produce with the funds being provided by Figment, Channel Four and Polygram. However Trainspotting was a box office success pulling in people, part of this success may be because of the aggressive distribution of Trainspotting in the UK from Film Fours Distribution Company Film Four Distributions Limited.à Another example of diversity in British Cinema since the 1990s is Mrs Brown. Mrs Brown was made in 1997 and was directed by British Director John Madden who also directed Shakespeare in Love. The film is based on Queen Victoria (Judi Drench) in 1864, who at the time was in deep mourning for her husband Prince Albert after his sudden death. Her private secretary arranges for John Brown (Billy Connolly), her ghillie to bring her favourite horse down from Scotland. This then leads to Queen Victoria then developing a close relationship which becomes the subject of scandalous gossip in Victorian Society hence the film title Mrs Brown.à Mrs Brown was a very low budget film as it costs only à ¯Ã ¿Ã ½1 million to produce with the funds being provided by BBC Films and BBC Scotland. .u55c3feb82c301094aee6b5403712e82f , .u55c3feb82c301094aee6b5403712e82f .postImageUrl , .u55c3feb82c301094aee6b5403712e82f .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u55c3feb82c301094aee6b5403712e82f , .u55c3feb82c301094aee6b5403712e82f:hover , .u55c3feb82c301094aee6b5403712e82f:visited , .u55c3feb82c301094aee6b5403712e82f:active { border:0!important; } .u55c3feb82c301094aee6b5403712e82f .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u55c3feb82c301094aee6b5403712e82f { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u55c3feb82c301094aee6b5403712e82f:active , .u55c3feb82c301094aee6b5403712e82f:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u55c3feb82c301094aee6b5403712e82f .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u55c3feb82c301094aee6b5403712e82f .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u55c3feb82c301094aee6b5403712e82f .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u55c3feb82c301094aee6b5403712e82f .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u55c3feb82c301094aee6b5403712e82f:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u55c3feb82c301094aee6b5403712e82f .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u55c3feb82c301094aee6b5403712e82f .u55c3feb82c301094aee6b5403712e82f-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u55c3feb82c301094aee6b5403712e82f:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: A British Muslim EssayMrs Brown was a very successful film in the US and the UK. An example of this success is that in the UK it was one of the films that made up to 23% of British box office successes in the UK in 1997. This may be because the narrative and the iconography shown in Mrs Brown are part of a very popular genre among audiences in the UK and US, this narrative and iconography are also shown in the film Young Elizabeth which was made in 1998 and directed by Shekhar Kapur. Toby Miller quoted that this is because it is the preferred image of Britain showing heritage and tranquillity It also could have been down to the fact that the distribution of Mrs Brown was very aggressive especially in the US and was handled by the American distribution company Miramax who also distributed The English Patient (Anthony Mingella 1996) and Little Voice (Mark Horman 1998).à Another example of diversity in British cinema since the 1990s is East is East. East is East was made in 1999 and was directed by British director Damien ODonnell and produced by Leslie Udwin The film is a social realist comedy which is set in the 1970s and concentrates on cultural diversity, cultural identity and cultural crisis. These themes in the film are embraced through two cultures; Christianity vs. Islam and the Northern Working Class vs. Asians. The film put across a very realist approach, an example being the inclusion of the Former conservative MP Enoch Powells Rivers of Blood speech which was said in the 1970s and referred to the increasing number of immigrants who were living in England The film is based on a mixed raced relationship with the fathers (Om Puri) religious beliefs being with Islam and the mothers (Linda Bassett) religious beliefs being with Christianity.à This leads the children to becoming very confused as they want to take up the British, Christian culture but the father will not let them as he wants them to take up the Pakistan, Islam culture and even arranges marriages behind his sons back. East is East costs 2.4 million to make but the response to the film surpassed expectations as the number of prints in circulation increased from 79 to 246 in the first few weeks. It took over 1 million in the first weekend and by the middle of 2000 had taken 10 million in British and foreign markets.à East is East was suppose to being funded by FilmFour and the BBC, but the BBC pulled out at the last minute leaving FilmFour to fund it on their own with the support of the MEDIA programme. This turned out to be FilmFours gain and the BBCs lost.
